Rockley is seeking to employ a team of outdoor activity instructor apprentices to join us. An outdoor activity instructor supervises and guides children and adults in activities and pastimes, such as windsurfing and climbing. We are looking for hard working and motivated apprentices that love the outdoors, keen to learn and happy to be outside. What will the apprentice be doing?

The main responsibility of an outdoor Activity Instructor is to run a safe and enjoyable activity session. They will:

  • Prepare for the session – gather information about the participants and resources for the activity
  • Deliver the session – brief participants, maintain safety, provide on-going instruction and encouragement
  • Meet session outcome – support participants to achieve set outcome (such as new skills / knowledge, thrill seeking, personal or team challenge)
  • Close the session – hand-over participants, return resources and equipment, log any issues

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

Level 3 Diploma - Outdoor Activity Instructor.

Depending on whether you apply to be based at our Poole Centres or our Wareham activity centre, your apprenticeship will specialise in the activities of that centre. Therefore, depending on which centre you are based, you will be trained to deliver as many of the activities we offer as possible, such as:

  • Waterbased - Sailing, Windsurfing, Paddleboarding, Canoeing, Kayaking, Powerboating, Bell Boating, Raft Building etc
  • Land based - High / Low Ropes, Climbing, Abseiling, Mountain Biking, Walking, Orienteering, Rifle Shooting, Tunnelling, Tomahawk Throwing, Archery, Team Building, Expeditions, Bushcraft etc

This role is an exciting opportunity for someone to develop their career in the outdoors industry where there are lots of opportunities for progression and further development. Full training and support will be offered and therefore applications are welcome from people with experience in sport and the outdoors or applicants that are new to the industry.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

Our apprentices go on to work in sport and the outdoors. Some stay with Rockley working their way up through the business as senior instructors, assistant managers, centre managers, and such like. Others go on to travel the world, working as an instructor or being employed on a ski season. We also have apprentices progress on to university to study sport related degrees, like outdoor adventure management.
