What will the apprentice be doing?
Engineers and craft persons play a crucial role in the operation and maintenance of the entire plant at the Shapfell site and the role can vary widely. Our Mechanical Engineering Craft are trained to be flexible, knowledgeable and highly skilled to operate on the scale and variety of machines and equipment not normally experienced in local industries.
You will maintain, repair, install and replace a wide range of mechanical equipment, ensuring that high performance and reliability is maintained, and that the highest safety standards are met.
The role covers a wide range of disciplines and equipment including
o Pneumatic and Hydraulic Systems
o Conveyors & materials handling equipment
o Pumping, Washing and screening systems
o Automated plant and equipment
o Drives, Gearboxes, couplings and spindles.
o General mechanical infrastructure and buildings
o Locomotives & mobile plant
o Pressure systems, piped services and lifting equipment
o Gas fired Kilns and associated combustion control equipment
o Rail and road tanker loading equipment
What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?
You will be expected to work towards the Engineering Fitter Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard, including Pearson Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering with support from your employer and Kendal College. As part of your apprenticeship, and dependent on your prior attainment, you may be required to complete maths and English Functional Skills which is an integral part of your apprenticeship.
The successful candidate will be joining an established 4 year apprenticeship training program using nationally recognized qualifications, leading to an “Advanced Manufacturing Engineering Apprenticeship” and full Mechanical Craft qualifications or further.
The four year period will generally consist of:
On-site training with College Day Release.
Apprentices are encouraged to enhance their studies in due course by completing an HNC in Mechanical Engineering. There is potential to progress through foundation degrees and Mechanical Engineering degrees for the right individuals.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?
On Completion of Apprenticeship full time employment as a Mechanical multiskilled Craftsperson would be the normal appointment, Apprentices are encouraged however to enhance their studies in due course by completing an HNC in Mechanical Engineering, toward supervisory and senior mechanical positions. There is potential to progress further through foundation degrees and Mechanical Engineering degrees for the right individuals, To Tata Engineer positions, Chartered Engineer status, and a vast range of career opportunities.
