What will the apprentice be doing?

Assessing behaviour of metals and other materials used in products and tools supplied by the company and with reference to the 'Assessment Methods Mapping', detailed within the Level 6 Manufacturing Engineer Standard.

Role & responsibilities:

  • Follow guidance on the correct way to examine Pandrol raw materials and components by non-destructive and destructive test methods
  • Preparation of test samples for analysis 
  • Close assessment and inspection (macroscopic and microscopic) of Pandrol rail fastening components before and after testing and noting key aspects into the written test records
  • Collation of test data for inclusion in further analysis or test reports
  • Provide assistance to Pandrol Group companies for routine quality assurance activities conducted by the Technical Department

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

Product Design & Development Engineers work on all stages of product creation, product modification and product componentry. They support activities ranging on early concept feasibility, Computer Aided Design and other modelling, activities and stages through to final preparation for launch and customers. This includes working in concept studios, rapid prototyping, assembly, testing, validating and analysing performance. Typically they work closely with suppliers and managers in bring new concepts to life or contributing to redesigns of existing products.

You will study on a Degree Level 6 Product Design & Development Engineer standard on a Foundation Degree in Manufacturing Technology pathway.  On completion of this, you will gain a qualification in Engineering at Degree Level 6 standard.

During the first year of the apprenticeship, your learning will take place at the University of Sheffield’s AMRC Training Centre based at Catcliffe, Rotherham, for an initial block of study on a full-time basis. After this, you will attend the Training Centre for one day a week for knowledge study.
