What will the apprentice be doing?

As a Laboratory Taxonomist apprentice at Ocean Ecology, you’ll become an integral part of a rapidly growing company with highly dynamic team. The role will include in-house training in processing marine samples as well as training on identifying marine species.

Some of your main responsibilities include:

  • Helping with the day-to-day upkeep and running of the company’s laboratories
  • Assisting with different stages of marine sample analysis, including: Sieving, extracting biota from sediment, bio massing and assisting with particle size analysis
  • General upkeep of client and in-house specimen reference collections

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

Over 21 months, you’ll devote a minimum of 6 hours of your working week on ‘off the job’ training. This can include theory training (for example, virtual lessons and online learning), alongside practical training (for example shadowing, mentoring, and time spent writing assignments. Together this will count towards a Level 3 Laboratory Technician apprenticeship. You’ll be trained by an expert tutor from Tiro as well as an experienced mentor at Ocean Ecology who together, will make sure you develop the knowledge, skills, and work habits you’ll need to succeed in your career.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

Upon completion of the apprenticeship, you’ll have the opportunity to continue your journey with the company on a permanent basis within the laboratory or to explore different sectors. Not only that but the apprentice will have the opportunity to become a registered Science technician (RSci Tech).
