What will the apprentice be doing?

The Underwriting Apprentice pathway:

Underwriters are key decision makers in assessing and selecting the risks Hiscox cover. In this role you’ll work with experts including lawyers, data analysts, and marketing professionals to ensure we are ready to support our clients’ needs. This could be anything from an insurance renewal against flooding in North America to evaluating an emerging cyber risk in Asia.

You will start your learning as an Underwriting Apprentice supporting the underwriting teams and partnering with experienced colleagues across the business. Your first 2 years will focus on building your knowledge of specialist insurance, how the industry works and the underwriting process. You will also be supported to complete your Level 3 Insurance Practitioner apprenticeship and relevant professional qualification.

After completing your initial apprenticeship training, you will then have the opportunity to progress to an Associate Underwriter position and deepen your knowledge of the risks we insure. You will be given the tools and support to quickly increase your responsibility and eventually progress to have larger decision making authority as you build your skills and experience.

Your day to day will include:

  • Learning about the specialist insurance market and developing your underwriter skillset.
  • Supporting your team with the underwriting process
  • Partnering with the operations team to ensure that appropriate documentation is present, and the internal underwriting system remains accurate.
  • Liaising with internal and external stakeholders to ensure a high level of service for clients.
  • Supporting the team to identifying opportunities for process improvement.
