What will the apprentice be doing?

As an electrical maintenance apprentice, you would service and repair machinery and equipment in a glass manufacturing and transformation facility.

  • Manufacturing float glass
  • Coating glass to increase energy efficiency
  • Laminating glass for security and noise reduction purposes
  • Utilities and building services (lighting / heating)

You could work on mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatics to guard against production delays or shut-down of systems.

Your job would fall into one of two areas – preventative (planned) maintenance, and emergency maintenance.

In preventative maintenance, your duties would include:

  • Routine maintenance to prevent breakdowns
  • Finding and fixing faults, carrying out repairs using a variety of electrical and mechanical principles
  • Fitting and assembly skills including the use of power and hand tools
  • Carrying out scheduled overhaul and replacing parts that have reached the end of their working life
  • Carrying out condition monitoring on equipment

Emergency maintenance tasks would include:

  • Responding immediately to machinery breakdowns
  • Fixing faults on site or working with external partners/contractors

You would use manufacturer's technical manuals and diagrams to help locate faults, and carry out the work with a range of instruments and tools. You would usually work as part of a small team with guidance from a shift engineer.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

Students will be working on a 4 year apprenticeship, year 1 will be spent at the HETA training centre where they will complete the following training:

  • Electrical workshop training including Maintenance, PLC's and Instrumentation
  • A BTEC Level 3 Extended certificate in engineering delivered one day a week
  • 1 day a week, completing a Level 3 technical qualification equivalent to A-Level standard. This includes theory lessons in health & safety, engineering maths and science
  • You will be working with our instructors to develop the knowledge skills and behaviours required of your apprenticeship standard

Years 2, 3 and 4 will be spent on site at Saint Gobain where they will work alongside the maintenance team and gain hands on experience and training to further their knowledge as well as working towards their maintenance and operations engineering technician qualification.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship candidates can be offered a full time contract of employment in their chosen specialism.

Saint Gobain Glass believe in developing people and there will therefore be options to progress within the company with opportunities for higher education or through multi-skilling.
