Sheet Metal Products are looking to recruit an apprentice, to work within their Byker workshop. You will be working on a range of tasks within fabrication from small brackets to full size pharmaceutical clean-rooms. You will also use the saw and guillotine to cut materials followed by the folder or rolls to form them into a product ready to weld. This is a fantastic opportunity for the right candidate to earn a salary and gain a level 3 qualification.

What will the apprentice be doing?
Duties:
- The apprentice would initially learn how to keep their work area clean and tidy but would also be responsible for general tidiness of the workshop. They would assist in the loading and unloading of tools and materials delivered to and from the workshop.
- They would be working on site with a mentor to assist in any installations/repairs.
- The apprentice would be introduced to the tape measure where they would learn to accurately measure sheet and sectional materials e.g. angle bar and hollow sections.
- They would use the saw and guillotine to cut materials followed by the folder or rolls to form them into a product ready to weld. Welding methods would be taught including MIG and TIG.
- As the apprentice advances their duties will become more varied and they will be asked to produce a full project on their own, a favourite is their own workbench!
A fully trained sheet metal worker would be able to produce a complex item from flat sheet stainless steel being able to tig weld to a high standard suitable for the pharmaceutical industry. This includes the ability to ‘dress’ a job/weld to a high standard.
What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?
You will be completing the level 3 Metal Fabrication apprenticeship which will require you to spend one day per week on campus.
You will study one of the following qualifications:
Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Knowledge)
Level: 3
Extended Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Knowledge)
This apprenticeship day at college will be based at our Energy Academy in Wallsend.
What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?
- On completion of the apprenticeship the now tradesperson would command a good rate of pay and may move to a more senior roll.
