What will the apprentice be doing?

1.Responsibility - Safety Management

  • Create & maintain a safe working environment through continuous improvement
  • To ensure operational areas are kept to the highest standard of housekeeping
  • To undertake appropriate risk assessments
  • To conduct inspections and audits at regular intervals, acting on hazards as they are present
  • To be an active member of the H&S Committee, to suggest appropriate solutions to H&S matters

2.Paper Sludge and Effluent System Responsibilty

  • To be able to operate the Effluent Plant to a high standard of safety and good housekeeping
  • To be able to monitor the Water quality of the effluent treatment plant
  • To understand the Sludge de-watering systems
  • To optimise the effluent treatment process to get the best results possible

3.Stock Preparation Responsibility

To be able to assist the Stock preparation process ensuring the continuous flow of high-quality paper stock to the machine:

  • To be able to operate the Stock Preparation to a high standard of safety and good housekeeping
  • To have a good understanding of the different waste paper types
  • To understand the cost implications of each type of waste paper
  • To ensure the correct type and amount of waste and is used, by ratio & by volume
  • To ensure that all screens are routinely cleaned
  • To fully understand the entire Stock preparation process.To optimise the process to get the best results possible

4.Re-Winder Responsibility’s

To be able to assist on the re-winder to ensure a continuous production process.

  • To fully understand the entire re-winding process including loading and unloading of reels
  • To optimise the re-winding process to get the best results
  • To be have a good understanding of the knives used in the re-winding process
  • To be able to both stop and start the re-winder safely and efficiently
  • To ensure that all finished goods are manufactured to the correct specifications

5.Converting and Packaging Responsibility’s

To be able to assist on the converting line to ensure a continuous production process.

  • To fully understand the entire converting and packaging process including loading and unloading of reels
  • To optimise the converting and packaging process to get the best results
  • To be have a good understanding of the log saw and its maintenance requirements
  • To be able to perform quality checks and record correctly the results
  • To be able to perform safety checks and record correctly the results
  • To ensure operators have completed the necessary safety and housekeeping duties
  • To be able to both stop and start the Line safely and efficiently
  • To ensure that all finished goods are manufactured to the correct specifications

6.Responsibility - Operational Management

  • Assist the production team to optimize the paper machine to maximize productivity while maintaining product quality standards
  • Optimize machine uptime to ensure targets and budgets are met
  • Be an active member of improvement projects with a focus on reducing costs, increasing productivity and quality
  • Plan, initiate, supervise all grade changes
  • Conduct lab work to ensure paper and sludge quality standards are met
  • To take an active role in fault finding with respect to paper quality defects/output efficiencies
  • Provide input and support for capital projects from inception to completion

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

The apprenticeship will consist of a combination of block release at CATCH in Stallingborough and onsite with your employer.

You will complete the level 3 science manufacturing technician standard including the City & Guilds L3 0610 in Process Technology.

In addition to this you will also complete a Level 2 and Level 3 qualification in papermaking.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

Successful completion of the apprenticeship could lead to a higher-level apprenticeship or full-time employment for the right candidate.

You will have developed a variety of interchangeable skills and have an in depth understanding of the papermaking industry.

Things to consider
