What will the apprentice be doing?

  • To maintain, inspect, repair and test the Councils vehicles and/or plant and equipment.
  • Prepare, present and accompany all HGV vehicles, other than exempt categories, for annual MOT inspections.
  • Carry out periodic safety inspections to all HGV vehicles to DVSA inspection manual standards.
  • Carry out fault diagnosis on complex hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical systems.
  • To carry out welding, fabrication and body repairs as required.
  • To attend broken down or accident damaged vehicles and effect permanent or running repairs as required.
  • To prepare and decommission vehicles. Fitting and removing a diverse range of ancillary equipment, accessories and livery.
  • To complete associated paperwork to ensure that all statistics and legal information are produced, update dedicated workshop computer system as necessary.
  • To ensure that all relevant legislation and Health and Safety procedures are adhered to.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

The delivery of this course takes place over 3 years and is conducted through 1-week block release every other month from start to finish. A course plan is issued on enrolment covering the whole apprenticeship duration so that dates are issued well ahead to ensure best planning for the employer and apprentice allowing maximum attendance on all dates given.

The apprentice will gain valuable workplace experience through the completion of this qualification and will achieve the Level 3 Heavy Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician through City and Guilds allowing for eligibility to apply to the relevant body as a qualified Engineering Technician. For further development there is opportunity in the future to then progress to a Master Technician once skills from the Level 3 have been thoroughly put into practice.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship, you may be offered continued employment with Lewes District Council.  As well as further career opportunities in Workshop Management.

Enrolment onto your apprenticeship programme is subject to prior attainment checks, and your Personal Learning Record will be reviewed upon successful appointment. We are also obligated to follow the guidelines around eligibility, set out by the government apprenticeship funding rules. PLEASE NOTE: you will be required to attend the Training Centre in Rochester, Kent for up to 1 week block release every other month.
