Carmet Tug Company are looking for an apprentice to join our team on the River Mersey, working onboard our tugs and workboats in conjunction with shore-based learning to gain a National Diploma in Workboat studies. Candidates should be able to travel to/from Eastham CH62 0BB daily. Passes at Maths and English at GCSE level 4 or above.

What will the apprentice be doing?
You will be working on deck to:
- Assist in the safe day to day deck operations of tugs and workboats
- Maintain, service and clean the vessel. Including paintwork and mechanical equipment
- Operate cranes and winches
- Set towing equipment
- Assist in loading including driving a forklift truck
- Keep premises and yards clean and tidy
What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?
You will gain the Level 3 Workboat Crewmember apprenticeship standard.
Qualifications will include:
- STCW Basic Safety Courses: Personal Survival Techniques, Firefighting and Fire Prevention, Emergency First Aid, Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities
- STCW[1] Proficiency in Designated Security Duties
- STCW Navigational Watch Rating Certificate (incl. 2 months statutory sea time)
- MCA[2] Auxiliary Engine Course (AEC) Parts 1&2
- MCA Efficient Deck Hand Certificate (incl. 6 months statutory sea time)
- Marine Hydraulic Loader Crane Operators certificate
- Slinger and Signaller’s certificate
Study will be block release at a residential course travel accommodation and subsistence will be provided.
What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?
Workboat apprentice can progress to Skippering Work Boat and Tugs.
