What will the apprentice be doing?

The role will mainly comprise of (but not limited to:

  • Fabricating one off jobs from drawings
  • Drilling, marking out, painting
  • Bandsaw drill and circular saw machinery use

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

Level 2 Lean Manufacturing Operative apprenticeship standard which includes:

  • Level 2 Diploma in Manufacturing (knowledge and skills)
  • Functional Skills in maths and English (if required)

Learning will take place in the workplace with the need to attend training with NSEGTA when required.

About the employer

Matthews and son was formed in the mid 1960's predominately supplying the pottery industry with forged blacksmith works. The company later started to produce quality steel fabrications for the pottery and associated industries. The company expanded and moved to Howson Street in Hanley where they continued to expand their client base and services The company remained in Hanley until May 2009 when it was decided that due to an increased workload and expanding client base, larger premises were required. Our new premises in Malt Lane, Longton, Stoke-on-Trent boasts a 6000 square feet facility and can now offer a plasma cutting service, with sizes up to 3000mm x 1500mm. The core business is general fabrication work and site services. Customers include : British Waterways, Stoke-on-Trent City Council, Armitage Vanesta, WWRD UK LTD, Lister Trade Frames and Seldon Research, to name but a few.
