What will the apprentice be doing?

PLEASE NOTE: This apprenticeship is due to start September 2023, but there is opportunity to work with the company beforehand.

Specific actions/responsibilities:

Extrusion Tooling and assets

  • Cleaning, maintenance of and assembly of all Extrusion tooling offline inc tooling fault log management
  • Replacement of parts and manage all tooling correction
  • Involvement in the commissioning of new product/amended Extrusion tooling
  • Monitor and maintain all elements of Extrusion tooling

Tool Room process control

  • To reduce process waste to agreed production targets
  • Create and maintain shop floor product specification per tooling product
  • Fault-finding and problem-solving of all aspects of Extrusion tooling process
  • Support the overall Extrusion Dept to achieve the day-to-day business and service targets

Extrusion support and development of problem solvers

  • Extrusion Operator processing Development - training, coaching, mentoring and reviewing
  • Problem-solving & troubleshooting on & offline with Extrusion operators & setters

Process flow and communication

  • Co-operate closely with Operations Manager, Extrusion Team Leaders, Tool Room Manager & Planning Manager
  • Communication, co-ordination and collaboration with all work areas to continuously improve process flow
  • Involvement in problem-solving of complaints - external, internal, supplier & non-conformity

General Lean Green Safe and Clean

  • Compliance with recognised quality and environmental procedures within department
  • Health & Safety, housekeeping and standards within areas
  • Tool Room area asset care and issued equipment management
  • Understanding & implementing QPSL Policy's & Procedures

Processes Involved

  • Responsible for making complex, bespoke and precision tools (such as jigs, moulds and extrusion die and calibration tooling), special guides and holding devices, which are then used in the manufacturing process to make extruded products
  • Working with a variety of materials including metals, alloys, plastics, and ceramics and will be proficient in the knowledge of how to machine and work with these different materials
  • Tools will be monitored and maintained to identify, and implement, any necessary modification or repairs
  • The role will involve using computer numerically controlled (CNC) machines and a solid variety of technical IT, CAD, CAM and EDM processes and skills will be developed.

Typical tasks include

  • Assembling, fitting and repairing tools
  • Following engineering drawings to measure and mark out the design for the tool
  • Using hand tools such as files, hacksaws and grinders
  • Using machinery such as lathes, presses, milling machines and grinders to cut and shape the tools
  • Using 2D and 3D computer aided design and manufacturing software (CAD/CAM)
  • Design of extrusion tooling - die and calibration flow
  • Using precision measurement instruments such as micrometres, gauges and vernier callipers to check the tool's dimensions
  • Operating precision equipment such as CNC lathes, milling machines, surface grinders and EDM wire and spark erosion machines
  • Monitoring the tools used on the manufacturing line to ensure efficient run rates and identify necessary repairs or possible improvements whilst assisting with tool maintenance
  • Attending machine/tooling breakdowns to identify the root cause and solve the problem
  • Compiling data and producing reports on tooling

Intrinsic elements of role

  • Moderate use of DSE equipment
  • Moderate levels of moving and handling, which will include bending and stooping
  • Moderate manual tasks, lifting products below 25kg
  • Moderate levels of manual dexterity
  • High use of manual hand tools
  • Moderate use of safety equipment including PPE

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

  • Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence)
  • Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Competence) - Toolmaker, Tool & Die Maintenance
  • Level 3 Diploma or extended Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Knowledge)
  • Functional skills in English, Maths and ICT (if not already achieved)
