What will the apprentice be doing?

This role requires to be filled with the aim of developing the technical skills necessary to produce machined parts by programming, setting up, and operating a computer numerical control (CNC) machine; maintaining quality and safety standards. During your apprenticeship you will learn and be able to complete the following:

  • Able to read engineering drawings
  • Work on own initiative
  • Ability to operate a variety of large CNC machines
  • Use measuring equipment
  • General engineering/manufacturing methods, techniques
  • Understanding and interpreting relevant engineering/manufacturing data and documentation in order to complete their job role
  • Understanding the different roles and functions in the organisation and how they interact
  • Obtaining, checking and using the appropriate documentation; such as job instructions, drawings, quality control documentation

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

After a period of foundation skills and technical knowledge development all apprentices will be required to achieve the following qualifications:

  • Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence)
  • Level 2 Diploma in Machining (Foundation Knowledge)

After a further period of skills and technical knowledge development all apprentices will be required to achieve the following qualifications:

  • Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Competence) - Machining
  • Level 3 Diploma in Machining (Development Knowledge)

You will study on a Level 3 Engineering Technician standard on a Machinist - Advance Manufacturing Engineer pathway.  On completion of this, you will gain a qualification in Engineering at Advanced Level 3 standard.

During the first year of the apprenticeship, your learning will take place at the University of Sheffield’s AMRC Training Centre based at Catcliffe, Rotherham, for an initial block of study on a full-time basis. After this, you will attend the Training Centre for one day a week for knowledge study.
