What will the apprentice be doing?

  • We are looking for an enthusiastic Apprentice Steel fixer to join the team working on a project with a main contractor in the Cambridge area.Steel fixing is the construction and assembly of various steel components that are required to reinforce concrete, structures.

As an apprentice Steel Fixer, you will be learning how to:

  • Set out the work area, following engineering plans.
  • Use hand and power tools to cut and bend bars or mesh.
  • Tie in reinforcement bars together with wire, clips or welds to build up sections.
  • Fit spacers and 'chairs' - supports.
  • Fix wooden formwork and shuttering that holds setting concrete in place.
  • Secure steel to concrete bases.
  • Install beams and pre-cast slabs.
  • Work closely with engineering designers, steel erectors and other construction workers.

You could work on high rise buildings, on a construction site or on other structures. Your working environment may be at height, physically demanding, outdoors in all weathers

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

You will work toawards a Level 2 Steel Fixer qualification and as well as site instruction and experience, you wil attend college on block release to gain further tuition.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

There is opportunity to move into full time employment on successful completion of the Apprenticeship.

Things to consider

You will need to be willing to work at height, wear PPE at all times, work outdoors in all weathers. You will need to have good numerical skills and be able to pass a drugs & alcohol test. You will also need to pass and obtain a CSCS card before you can begin on site.
