What will the apprentice be doing?

The role of Carbon Analyst is primarily about calculating the carbon footprint of our client businesses, following the latest guidelines in the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and our certification criteria.

It involves checking, interpreting and translating data to make it usable; entering data into our carbon calculator software whilst making appropriate assumptions and estimates; validating calculations; performing additional analysis to provide further insight; and communicating effectively with clients and client-facing members of the team.

There is also a secondary role in collating and analysing company Key Performance Indicators and offering insights that may help improve company performance.


1. Calculating the carbon footprint of our client businesses using the tools provided, following the latest guidelines in the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, our certification criteria and data handling procedures plus any other best practice guidelines that may be adopted in the future.


2. Ensuring the consistency and reliability of input data by; checking the data received from clients for suitability; assessing data quality; requesting further information appropriately; interpreting and translating the data to make it usable for carbon calculation; making 
appropriate and reasoned assumptions and estimates to fill data gaps.


3. Ensuring the consistency and accuracy of carbon calculations by entering data correctly into our carbon calculator software, choosing appropriate conversion factors and categorising emissions in line with the guidelines; recording all assumptions and supplementary calculation; validating both your own calculations and those done by other analysts.


4. Giving additional value to our clients by performing additional analysis and data drilldowns as required to provide further insight into carbon calculations; identifying and suggesting additional analysis that may provide further insight.


5. Uploading the results of calculations and analysis into the client portal together with appropriate notes, explanations and supplementary calculations.


6. Communicating effectively and appropriately with both clients and client-facing members of the team to explain issues with suitability of data provided by clients, key assumptions and the results of both primary carbon footprint calculations and further analysis.


7. Collating and analysing company Key Performance Indicators and offering insights that may help improve company performance.


8. Ensure confidential and personal data is processed and stored safely and securely by following our data privacy and IT security policies.


9. Researching and keeping up to date with the latest developments in data handling and analysis as well as carbon footprint calculation and validation.


10. Organise, manage and prioritise time effectively to ensure work is delivered within agreed timescales.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

Data Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard:

The successful candidate will undertake an eighteen-month, nationally recognised qualification through TDM. This is a work-based learning programme which will require commitment to block weeks in an online training room once every quarter working towards the qualification along with weekly off the job training and monthly coaching sessions.

You will be required to demonstrate through the standard that you meet all competencies and behaviours, which will lead to the achievement of the qualification. These block weeks will take place at either of our training centres, in Birmingham or Worcester, whichever is more suitable for your location.

You will have a designated mentor in the workplace to support your learning and at the end of programme will be assessed via an external assessment body.

This is a Level 3 qualification.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

Our aim is to develop our apprentices to be able to perform the role of Carbon Analyst by the end of their apprenticeship period and they will be given appropriate education and mentorship to achieve this. Following the apprenticeship we are open to discuss the opportunity for further development, and would actively encourage and support the candidate to apply for membership of the Institute of Environmental Management.
