What will the apprentice be doing?

Mechatronics Maintenance Technicians ensure that plant and equipment perform to the required standard to facilitate production targets regarding Safety, Quality, Delivery and Cost within High Value Manufacturing environments. The work will cover a broad range of activities including installation, testing, fault finding and the ongoing planned maintenance of complex automated equipment. This requires the application of a complex blend of skills, knowledge and occupational behaviours across the electrical, electronic, mechanical, fluid power and control systems disciplines.

Whilst at BD you will be trained to:

  • Read and interpret relevant data and documentation used to maintain components, equipment and systems
  • Carry out condition monitoring of plant and equipment
  • Carry out planned maintenance activities on plant and equipment
  • Carrying out complex fault diagnosis and repair activities on high technology engineered systems such as: mechanical equipment, fluid and pneumatic power equipment, electrical and electronic equipment and process control equipment
  • Carrying out confirmation testing and subsequent smooth hand over of equipment and plant 
  • Support the installation, testing and commissioning of equipment (where applicable)
  • Contribute to the business by identifying possible opportunities for improving working practices, processes and/or procedures

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

Apprentices spend a total of four years at college, two for the Foundation Phase and two for the Development Phase, based on college attendance of one day per week. The remaining time will be in the workplace learning new Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours.

Apprentices complete the off-the-job training based on college attendance and recording where they have demonstrated learning new Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours within the workplace.

Our training provider is Cornwall College. The college training takes place at their premises in Plymouth, The Plymouth Engineering Skills Centre, Unit 24/25, Sisna Park, Estover, Plymouth PL6 7AE.

Apprenticeship qualifications achieved:

After a period of foundation skills and technical knowledge development, all apprentices will be required to achieve the following qualifications:

  • Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence)

After a further period of skills and technical knowledge development all apprentices will be required to achieve the following qualifications:

  • Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Competence) - Mechatronics Maintenance Technician
  • Level 3 Diploma or Extended Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Knowledge)

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

On successful completion of the 4 year apprenticeship programme it is anticipated that the candidates will be offered a full-time permanent production or moulding technician role.

The technician works as part of the manufacturing team on the shop floor. They are responsible for all technical and processing activities associated with the manufacture of medical devices and will also have operational responsibilities. This will mean that after the 4 year apprenticeship the candidate will be expected to work 12 hour continuous shifts. Either:

  • Continuous days 11am until 11pm, 3 days on, 3 days off - basic salary plus 32% shift premium
  • Continuous nights 11pm until 11am, 3 nights on, 3 nights off - basic salary plus 48% shift premium

These patterns do not rotate between days and nights, the candidate will work one or the other.

Many of our apprentices go on to become Engineering Shift Leaders and then progress to the job role of an Engineer working Monday to Friday.

Things to consider

You must ensure that you have suitable travel arrangements to get to and from work and college. Shortlisted applicants will initially be invited to undertake an online assessment. If successful at this stage, applicants will then be invited to attend an in-person assessment at Cornwall College Engineering Skills Centre, Sisna Park on 12th and 13th April 2023. This will be followed by an employer interview at BD Plymouth on 25th and 26th April 2023. Candidates must ensure they are available for in-person assessment and BD interviews.
