What will the apprentice be doing?
To be trained in the following areas, in our Maintenance department:
- Fault finding and diagnosis of mechanical/ electric breakdowns
- Use of hand tools to affect a repair
- Use of machine tools to fabricate or repair part
- Talk to suppliers and contractors to assist in maintenance activities
At the end of the period, the apprentice will have gained a broad knowledge and understanding of the mechanical maintenance of forgings in various materials for the Aerospace industry.
Key tasks & accountabilities:
- Assess breakdowns and machine issues
- Devise methods of repair
- Carry out repairs
- Ensure Job Report Sheets and other appropriate Documentation is completed in a timely manner and be fluent in Pirana reporting system
- Any other ad hoc duties as required
What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?
After a period of foundation skills and technical knowledge development all apprentices will be required to achieve the following qualifications:
- Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence)
After a further period of skills and technical knowledge development all apprentices will be required to achieve the following qualifications: - Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Competence) – Mechatronics Maintenance Technician
Plus one of the following - Level 3 Diploma in Engineering Technology (QCF) – for starts up to June 2017 only
- Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering Technologies (QCF) - for starts up to June 2017 only
- Level 3 Diploma or Extended Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Knowledge) – for all starts from 1st July 2017
You will study on a Level 3 Engineering Technician standard on a Mechatronics Maintenance Technician (Mechanical) pathway. On completion of this, you will gain a qualification in Engineering at Advanced Level 3 standard.
During the first year of the apprenticeship, your learning will take place at the University of Sheffield’s AMRC Training Centre based at Catcliffe, Rotherham, for an initial block of study on a full-time basis. After this, you will attend the Training Centre for one day a week for knowledge study.

Completion of the University of Sheffield’s AMRC Training Centre apprenticeships are nationally recognised qualifications which are acknowledged and respected by employers across the world. These can open the door to many more opportunities, such as Engineering Management and Project Engineering positions across a range of sectors worldwide.
