What will the apprentice be doing?

The NDT apprenticeship training programme prepares individuals with the skills and techniques to eventually take on a role within the NDT function. Non-destructive testing is a testing and analysis technique used by industry to evaluate the properties of products produced (predominantly steel) for characteristic differences or defects.

Generally, the following duties would be carried out within the role while under supervision

• Carrying out inspection using different NDT methods to reveal any defects
• Using techniques to interpret the data collected from the tests carried out
• Carrying out visual examinations of the product
• Operation of specific test equipment
• Marking any defects found and following the necessary procedures to rectify the defects
• Creating reports detailing the findings from the inspections 

• Preparing materials for presentations of results from inspections and recommendations for rectification of defects
• Reading and interpreting technical drawings and standards for the products requiring inspection.


£5.30 per hr initially (£10,335 per annum)

£6.83 per hr after successful qualification of one method (£13,318.50 per annum)

£9.18 per hr after successful qualification of 2 methods (£17,901 per annum)

£10.25 per hr after successful qualification of 3 methods (£19,987.50 per annum)

Non-destructive Testing Level 2 Apprenticeship Standard.

All training and learning to be delivered on site. 

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

All our apprentice contracts are a minimum of three years in duration. It is expected that once the apprenticeship has been completed within the three years, the apprentice(s) will apply for their first substantive position.

Things to consider

Role will require possible operation of crane and FLT. Will require manual lifting and standing for long periods. The apprentice will receive the same benefits as all employees with regards holidays, pension etc. 23 days annual leave plus stats (3 holidays will have to be used for Christmas period) Driving licence not needed but will need to be able to commute to premises.
