What will the apprentice be doing?

Our Materials Recovery Facilities (MRFs) are busy plants where materials like paper, cardboard, cans, and bottles are separated, sorted, baled, and sent on elsewhere to be recycled. We spend millions on industry-leading sorting technology and machinery, so engineering expertise is essential to ensure it is maintained and operating efficiently.

Under the supervision and guidance of our experienced and supportive ‘Resource & Recovery’ team, combined with online activities, webinars, tutorials, and day-release at Langley college, you will gain the practical skills and on-the-job training necessary to ensure our waste processing plant operates efficiently.

On a day-to-day basis, you will:

  • Assist with carrying out daily inspections, repairs, and routine maintenance on all equipment
  • Help with diagnosing and resolving breakdown problems
  • You will also get involved with ordering replacement parts for either fitting or stock

You will gain knowledge of:

  • Materials used in components/assemblies
  • Principles of design and operation – e.g., design for cost, minimising waste, productivity (speed), health and safety, reverse engineering
  • Manufacturing and assembly processes – e.g., filing, sawing, scraping, drilling, soldering, bolting, wire cutting, threading etc
  • Safe use of tools and equipment (hand and power tools); right tool for the job, requirements for machinery checks, adjustments, operation and shut down
  • Health and safety, personal protective equipment (PPE), manual handling, Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH), Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER)

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

  • Engineering Fitter Apprenticeship Level 3
  • Functional Skills level 2 in English and maths if required
  • One day a week class and practical training in Langley Campus, Langley

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

As part of your commitment to Grundon, you will be expected to remain in our employment for the duration of the apprenticeship and, if a position if available, for up to two years after successful completion of your apprenticeship.

We will continue to support you throughout your career with Grundon, and we actively encourage personal development and internal promotion. We practise what we preach – many of our former apprentices still work for us.
