What will the apprentice be doing?

The purpose of the role is to:

  • Provide general assistance to the practice team and project a positive and friendly image to patients and other visitors, either in person or via the telephone.
  • Receive, assist and direct patients in accessing the appropriate service or healthcare professional in a courteous, efficient and effective way.
  • Undertake a variety of administrative duties to assist in the smooth running of the practice.
  • Facilitate effective communication between patients, members the primary health care team, secondary care and other associated healthcare agencies.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • The duties and responsibilities to be undertaken by members of the practice reception team may include any or all of the items in the following list. Duties may be varied from time to time under the direction of Practice Manager/Team Leads, dependent on current and evolving practice workload and staffing levels:
  • Processing telephone requests for appointments, visits and telephone consultations ensuring accuracy of detail and prompt appropriate delivery to the appropriate healthcare professional
    Processing and distributing incoming (and outgoing) mail.
  • Enter requests for home visits, ensuring careful recording of all relevant details and where necessary refer to Duty Doctor.
  • Handling orders and collection of repeat prescriptions.
  • Deal with all general enquiries, explain procedures and make new and follow-up appointments.
  • Taking messages and passing on information.
  • Computer data entry, processing tasks and recording information in accordance with practice procedures.
  • Initiating contact with and responding to requests from patients, other team member and associated healthcare agencies and providers.
  • Clearing and re-stock consulting rooms as required.
  • Keeping the reception area, notice-boards and leaflet dispensers tidy and free from obstructions and clutter.
     

 

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

  • This is a fully worked based apprenticeship, unless you are required to complete: Functional Skills Maths and English. 
  • At the end of the apprenticeship, you will achieve your Level 3 in Business Administration. 
  • This opportunity is open to all ages 16 years and over. 
  • You will be required to complete an initial assessment and diagnostic in maths and English as part of the recruitment process.
