What will the apprentice be doing?

St. Ingunger Farm are proud to be able to offer a varied opportunity for an aspiring farmer to join their hardworking team.

The role will principally involve learning how to work with a range of heavy livestock, including Holstein Friesians, heifer replacements and beef cattle.

During your time as an apprentice, you will learn and be involved with duties connected to:

  • Animal husbandry
  • Movement of livestock
  • Health checks
  • Feeding and provision of water
  • Tractor work 
  • Scraping the yard
  • Cultivation
  • TB testing
  • Milking on occasion

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

The successful apprentice will be required to attend Duchy College Rosewarne on a one day per week basis, where you will work towards an industry recognised qualification known as 'General Farm Worker' level 2.

Apprentices will also work towards achieving:

City and Guilds Principles of Safe Handling and Application of Pesticides Guidance or Lantra Safe Use of Pesticides as well as Emergency First Aid at Work qualification.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

Progression opportunities onto the Level 3 Livestock Unit Technician Apprenticeship could be explored, alongside full-time employment openings with St. Ingunger Farm.

Things to consider

Prior farming experience would be beneficial to the role, but this is by no means essential. A positive and hardworking attitude is incredibly important, as well as a true interest towards building a long-term role within the industry. This is a very supportive employer who will wish to ensure a positive working environment. The employer is open minded in terms of working hours/days. Terms and shift patterns can be further discussed at the point of interview. Wages may be further enhanced 'over time', subject to the growth of knowledge, skills and understanding. The farm is based in a rural location. Please consider in detail, how you will reliably access the workplace each day, as well as your ability to get to Duchy College Rosewarne once a week.

About the employer

The family at St. Ingunger Farm near Bodmin has excellent experience of training apprentices, drawing from 51 years of farming practice. The farm is sited over 1,000 acres of farmland. Holstein Friesians (550), heifer replacements and beef cattle (450) are tended to. Block calving is in place and investment in a rotary milking parlour has been made. The successful applicant will get all-round farming experience, though the job role primarily connects to the care and wellbeing of livestock.
