What will the apprentice be doing?

As a Tool Setter at Jenks & Cattell Engineering, you will have the responsibility to set press tools in a safe and efficient manner with a focus on active improvement of the setting process, reduce set up times and record and feedback any tooling issues of production. The candidate will have to work closely with operations, production and quality control team managers, so excellent communication skills are essential. On a daily basis, the candidate will work in the factory in our on-site tool room and will set, form and amend any tools used to create our metal parts suitable and specific for our customers’ requirements. The tools used will be suitable for a wide range of industries including automotive, white goods and electrical. Ideally, the candidate will have an interest and understanding of the engineering environment as well as understanding metal presswork and tooling operations. At the end of the apprenticeship, you will have the option to do a duel role or specialise in either Tool Making or Tool Setting after learning both skills.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

L3 Engineering Technician Standard:

After a period of foundation skills and technical knowledge development all apprentices will be required to achieve the following qualifications:

  • Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence)

After a further period of skills and technical knowledge development all apprentices will be required to achieve the following qualifications:

  • Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Competence) – Toolmaker, Tool and Die Maintenance
  • Level 3 Diploma or Extended Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Knowledge)
