What will the apprentice be doing?

This occupation involves installing a range of roofing materials and products, at heigh. It includes interpreting drawings, measuring and calculating the required quantity of materials.

Roofing work can involve anything from repairing a single tile or slate on a domestic property, to re-roofing public buildings such as schools, working on new build housing projects, or installing the roof on large commercial buildings. 

 A roof slater and tiler works on a building site, or in domestic or commercial premises, installing slate and tile roof coverings and related products to both new and existing buildings.

  • Carry out a range of job tasks including measuring, marking out, fitting, finishing, positioning and securing
  • Install plain tiles, interlocking tiles, natural slates and fibre-cement slates
  • Install underlay, battens and related roofing components
  • Install pre-formed lead and/or proprietary flashings
  • Install dry and wet fixed products to verges, hips, ridge and valleys
  • Install insulation and ventilation products for warm and cold roof construction
  • Install roof windows and flashing kits

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

  • Roofer Level 2 Standard.
  • The candidates will attend Derwentside College on a block release basis
  • Apprentices without Level 1 English and maths will need to achieve this level and take the test for level 2 English and maths prior to taking their end point assessment

Attendance is 2 weeks at college every 8 weeks.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

These include developing in to second man, and then team leader roles in the short and medium term. The very skilled and knowledgeable roofers that develop key skills can eventually develop in to contract supervisor and contract manager positions in the long term.

Things to consider

The work is physically demanding, it is outdoor, roofers work in extreme weather conditions (hot and cold) and are typically in demand when it is raining. This is a good career option with the potential to make a good salary in the medium and long term which would help create a positive work / life balance for most. The team at NERC work across sites located from Northumberland down to Teesside. Candidates must be ok with working at heights.
