What will the apprentice be doing?

You will be required to provide support for the Humanities department by working in a range of classes with individual students or groups, as directed by the Learning Area Manager. You will work towards being able to deliver one-to-one or small group programmes outside the classroom for learners as identified by the Learning Area Manager, in conjunction with teaching staff. As your experience develops you may at times be required to cover part of a lesson or to set work for whole classes, in the case of the sickness absence of teaching staff, with support and direction from the Learning Area Manager.

Specific key responsibilities that will be developed:

  • Monitor and help students in working towards their learning and/or behaviour targets in the classroom, as directed by the Learning Area
    Manager in conjunction with teaching staff
  • Support the teachers’ delivery of the curriculum by understanding and learning how to make work more appropriate for students
  • Deliver one to one and small group programmes to students who are in need of extra support and challenge, outside the classroom, as directed by your manager in conjunction with teaching staff
  • To communicate concerns and news of progress to staff
  • Supporting students to access the curriculum whilst encouraging the development of independent learning skills
  • Assist in the preparation/adaptation of teaching and learning materials
  • Assisting with the supervision of students both on and off site when required
  • Contribute to the development of the Learning Support team by attending review meetings, staff meetings and in service training as appropriate
  • Carrying out designated record keeping and general administration
  • To be temporarily redeployed by the Learning Area Manager, to support in another area of college
  • To give assistance at college functions such as Awards Evenings, Open Evenings and Enrolment

What does the programme include?

The Level 3 Apprenticeship provides individuals with a sound knowledge base that can support them in undertaking further learning and development of their careers in youth work and related areas. These include:

  • Advanced Level Apprenticeship in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools
  • Level 3 Award in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools
  • Play work or Youth work for those wishing to transfer to other areas working with children and young people

This pathway also offers the participant a doorway into the teaching profession, offering the chance to work in a variety of educational settings with children of all ages. The experience gained from this apprenticeship in the practical teaching environment is invaluable.
 
What attendance is required?
 
Attendance at College will be required on weekly or monthly basis and may be needed during the school holidays. Time spent training will come under the working hours per week.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

Upon successful completion of the Apprenticeship, and subject to progress as an employee City of Portsmouth College would like to offer you a full-time job.
