What will the apprentice be doing?

£4.81 an hour, Monday-Friday on shift patterns (7:30am-4pm, 8am-4:30pm, 8:30am-5pm, 9am-5:30pm, 9:30am-6pm), 37 hours a week

We are looking for a Level 3 Early Years Educator Apprentice to provide care and support for all children attending Honeypot Nursery.
 
The role:

Day to day, you will be involved in:

  • Preparing healthy snacks
  • Supervising meal and snack times
  • Toilet/nappy change
  • Supervise and engage in play activities with the children, supporting and extending their learning and development
  • Participate in and plan small and whole group activities
  • Supervise outdoor play/learning
  • Encouraging positive behaviour
  • Assist or lead story and song sessions
  • Liaise with parents about home routines, home learning, behaviour, development
  • Record any observations on the on-line learning journal

Main duties will include:

  • Oversee and participate in children’s activities including planning and observation
  • Devising stimulating activities appropriate to ages of the children and maintain children’s records
  • Assist in maintaining a clean, healthy and safe environment
  • Attend training as necessary and carry out any other duties reasonably required by the nursery manager
  • Be responsible for own key group of children supporting their learning and development, planning next steps of learning and identifying any additional support that may be needed
  • Adhering to all nursery policies and procedures including safeguarding

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

What does the programme include?

  • Planning and supervising child initiated and adult led activities which are based around the needs and interests of each individual child
  • Supporting children to develop numeracy and language skills through games and play
  • Key person responsibility to help ensure each child feels safe and secure
  • Observing each child and shapes their learning experience to reflect their observations
  • Meeting the care needs of the individual child such as feeding, changing nappies and administration of medicine
  • Working in partnership with other colleagues, parents and/or carers or other professionals to meet the individual needs of each child
  • With additional experience, an Early Years Educator can become the manager of an early years setting
  • Individuals will undergo all the checks as per the EYFS requirements to ensure suitability to work with children

What attendance is required?
 
Attendance at College will be required on a weekly basis. Time spent training will come under the working hours per week.

Visits to the workplace will be arranged between yourself and your Apprenticeship Assessor.

It is a government requirement for you to spend 6 hours a week of your apprenticeship working towards your “Off the Job Learning” – off the job learning can consist of college attendance, coursework, project related work, employer training, mentoring and coaching.

Learning and assessment:

You will learn through a mix of college-based sessions, work-related activities, independent study and research. Assessment is on a continuous basis with a number of assessments in each unit. Assessments take a variety of forms, such as written reports, assignments, witness statements, observations and professional discussions. You will also be required to conduct a longitudinal study which your Apprenticeship Assessor will provide more information and guidance on when you start.

Alongside the CACHE Level 3 Diploma for the Early Years Workforce (Early Years Educator), you will be required to develop a portfolio of work to showcase how you have met the knowledge, skills and behaviours standards. Your Apprenticeship Assessor will guide and support you through this process and arrange on-site visits to observe you demonstrating the essential knowledge, skills and behaviours in your daily role. It is important for you to take ownership of your own learning by seeking out opportunities to gain new skills on the job with the employer. Your final grade will be determined by collective performance in the three assessments in the endpoint assessment.

What qualification will be achieved?

NCFE CACHE Level 3 Diploma for the Early Years Workforce (Early Years Educator)

Apprentices must successfully complete a first aid qualification in line with the requirements of the EYFS Framework (Annex A): Early years foundation stage (EYFS) statutory framework - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk).

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship, and subject to progress as an employee, City of Portsmouth College would like to offer you a full-time role.
