What will the apprentice be doing?

The apprentice Design Engineer (with full training) will carry out the design, development & specification of bespoke machinery and equipment used in critical & challenging applications. Due to the bespoke nature of the equipment, you will have a lot of flexibility with regard to design intent, material selection and manufacturing techniques, albeit adhering to internal quality standards, customer requirements and ensuring conformity to various related standards. You will be required to provide project updates and carry out regular design reviews internally and externally, visiting customer's sites where necessary. You will be expected to support the manufacturing team
during the assembly, commissioning & installation phase of a project as well as supporting sales by developing technical proposals.

Long term Responsibility Goals:

  • Design, development, and specification of bespoke equipment related to pressure & flow, machine safety, product handling and system automation
  • Careful selection of materials and manufacturing techniques to ensure correct fit, form, functionality, and value
  • Ensure that design outputs conform to internal quality standards, customer requirements and industry directives & standards
  • Output accurate CAD models and technical drawings using Solidworks and Autocad in line with BS8888, Production BOM's and other Technical Documentation for key stakeholders
  • Chair regular project design reviews with key stakeholders
  • Non-conformance and Engineering Change Management
  • Providing engineering support for all departments

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

The apprentice will be working towards completing the Engineering Technician Standard which will include the following: 

  • L2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing (Foundation Competence)
  • L3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Competencies) Product Design and Development
  • L3 Diploma or Extended Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Knowledge)

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

  • Advanced CAD, PDM & Industry Specific Skills/knowledge Training
  • Development of FE Analysis skills/techniques using up to date FEA software
  • Development and training to progress into the role of a Design Engineer
