What will the apprentice be doing?

  • To ensure that mechanical and electrical machinery and appliances are regularly serviced to a high standard with records of such maintenance and servicing logged
  • To ensure that tools and other equipment are kept in a good working order
  • To prepare materials and equipment for lessons
  • To place orders for materials and equipment and to be familiar with appropriate cost-effective suppliers
  • To maintain records of orders and ensure all are accounted for
  • To monitor stock levels and replace as appropriate
  • Where possible to carry out minor repairs to machinery, tools and equipment, including despatch to outside repairers, and to organise repairs within the department
  • To carry printing and photocopying support within the department
  • To support and inform, staff and students in relation to design materials and processes in the manufacture of project work
  • To support teaching in lessons within any of the subject specialisms
  • To bring to the attention of the Head of Department any issues relating to Health and Safety, including issues relating to defects in accommodation. Report and monitor these with site staff
  • To undertake such training as required to maintain up to date skills
  • To ensure all department rooms comply to Health and Safety specification
  • To write and maintain risk assessments and associated Health and Safety documentation
  • Maintain digital displays in the department
  • Liaise with IT support to maintain PCs in the department rooms
  • Produce and/or adapt worksheets and resources
  • To carry out any other appropriate tasks which may be required to maintain the efficient organisation and administration of the department
  • To work within the framework of the school ethos, adhering to the Code of Conduct at all times
  • To maintain high standards of professional behaviour and presentation
  • To undertake any other duties commensurate with this grade which may be required
  • To participate in necessary training and staff development
  • Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety and security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person
  • Be aware of and support difference and ensure equal opportunities for all
  • Contribute to the overall ethos/work/aims of the school
  • Assist with pupil first aid/welfare duties, looking after sick pupils, liaising with parents/staff etc.
  • Appreciate and support the role of other professionals
  • Attend and participate in relevant meetings as required

The above-mentioned duties are neither exclusive nor exhaustive and the post holder may be called upon to carry out such other duties as may be required by the Line Manager that are broadly within the grading level of the post and the competence of the post holder.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

  • Lab Tech Level 3

The Diploma aims to grow your existing skillset in the following key areas:

  • Becoming a systems design engineer within a real-life environment
  • Learning the methods and systems needed for accurate communication, reporting and recording of technical information
  • Assisting in the creation of design packs which may include schematics, drawings, reports and Bill of Materials
  • Understanding and adhering to the Health & Safety requirements
  • Learning how to work in a multitude of environments from offices, equipment rooms, trackside, stations and signalling centres
  • Working as part of a team and independently
  • All candidates take part in an initial intense training programme at the start of the selection process and will undertake functional skills if needed

During this period our experienced staff will prepare candidates for their placements by giving them the foundations that they will need for securing a placement. Our Employability team will also be available to support with interview skills ready for a placement interview.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

For the right candidate there may be an opportunity of a full-time position following successful completion of apprenticeship program - subject to business conditions at the time.
