What will the apprentice be doing?

The primary responsibility is to assist on a daily basis, the trained nurses, to assess the individual needs and capabilities of residents and reporting immediately any changes noted with regard to residents’ health and/or well-being. To provide care and support for all residents under the supervision of the Nurses/ Care Services Manager.


Core duties

· To provide person-centred care to residents, promoting their individuality and dignity at all times, and ensuring their hygiene, elimination, mobility, physical comfort, eating and drinking needs are met.

· Compiling and maintaining care plans for residents together with the resident and where appropriate their relatives, in conjunction with the nurses, ensuring all daily written records are completed clearly and accurately, being aware of specific support needs and any risk

· Becoming a key worker for a group of residents allocated by the trained nurse/Clinical Services Manager

· Reporting immediately to the Clinical Services Manager or nurse on duty, any illness, accident or event incurred by a resident, colleague, self or visitor to the home

· Assisting residents with social activities by interacting with them, encouraging them to continue with or take up new hobbies and activities such as those organised by the Wellbeing and Lifestyle team.

· Ensuring that the Nurse Call alarm system is answered in a timely manner and providing assistance where required

· Regularly undertaking observations of residents as determined in their care plans. To offer ongoing comfort to those who may be ill or requiring care at the end of their life, ensuring that their religious or cultural needs are fulfilled.

· Performing, reporting and recording, following training, clinical observations of residents’ temperature, pulse, breathing, height and weight. Obtaining urine, stool and sputum samples, as requested by the GP or RGN in charge. Performing simple urinalysis following training.

· Performing basic life support, or supporting the Do Not Attempt Resuscitation decision.

· Reporting immediately any faulty appliance, damaged furniture or equipment and/or potential hazard to the General Manager or Care Service Manager or in their absence to the Nurse in Charge.

· To supervise, guide and direct the work of Care Assistants, motivating them to perform at their best

Other requirements

·  To complete the Adult Social Care Level 3 qualification as part of a fully funded apprenticeship programme. To participate in the required learning and assessment process and to meet all deadlines associated with the qualification programme. You will be given time off and support to do this.

· To work shift patterns (early, late, Monday to Sunday) in accordance with the rota

· To wear appropriate Baycroft uniform

· To maintain and respect the confidentiality of our customers and their personal information

· To treat customers and colleagues with dignity and respect

· To follow all local and organisational policies and procedures, and CQC regulations including those relating to the safeguarding of vulnerable adults

· To follow health and safety requirements

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

  • Level 3 Diploma in Lead Adult Care, Functional skills (if required).
  • The training will be carried out on site, 20% off the job hours will be allocated by your line manager.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

You will work towards your level 3 in lead adult care allowing you the skills and knowledge to work as a lead carer. Once qualified you can work towards a level 4 qualification and persue a management role.
