What will the apprentice be doing?

This role is responsible for assuring laboratory functions are completed, in line with all the required testing and analysis required by the business and our customers. This role requires appropriate escalation of results chemistry, and swabbing results.


  • To conduct all activities within the laboratory
  • Ensure all testing is completed according to procedures and schedule.
  • Taking and maintaining routine product samples and managing retained samples
  • Quarantine product and retest as needed.
  • Participate in site projects when requested
  • Maintain GMP/hygiene standards of the laboratory as required
  • Work within site quality and health and safety requirements maintaining the needs of external and internal requirements (Food safety, legality, customer and BRC)
  • Good communication with other departments
  • Following technical requirements at every stage to ensure a consistent and safe product is produced
  • Proactive role on H&S within the site
  • Play an active role in hand hygiene compliance, ensuring follow up is conducted
  • Conduct routine Environmental swabbing and retests where required
  • Complete routine chemistry laboratory tests
    Prepare samples for external microbiological testing
  • Conducting plant swabs to release plant to production
  • Creation of Certificates of analysis for customers
  • Management of library samples, with items discarded as appropriate

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

After the 15 month apprenticeship the apprentice will achieve a Level 3 Laboratory Technician Apprenticeship.

The apprentice will be conducting their on-the-job training with Trewithen Dairy which is located at Greymare Farm, Lostwithiel, PL22 0LW.

The apprenticeship is delivered via a hybrid delivery style, both virtually in person and at the location of the employer.

The off-the-job training will be delivered within the first 12 weeks, which consists of 3 week incremental block releases, alternating between our instructors and the workplace.
