We have an opportunity within the Science department for a technician, whose role is to undertake a wide range of duties needed to enable the teaching staff to deliver the curriculum effectively.     The role is 30 hours per week, 39 weeks of the year (term time only) and is being offered on the pay range SES4 (£18,109-£21,438 FTE). Pro rata amount would be £12,864 per annum inclusive of holiday pay. This equates to £11 per hour.

What will the apprentice be doing?

Key Accountabilities under the direction of the Senior Science Technician and Head of Department
Key Tasks
1. Planning, preparing and managing science practical’s

  • Preparing materials and equipment for lessons, as requested by teachers in accordance with current Science department policy
  • Cleaning, making and maintenance of equipment to level of competence - if in doubt consult Head of Department and advise other technicians.  This does not include routine removal of graffiti or routine laboratory cleaning
  • Notifying any maintenance of fixtures and fittings to Senior Science Technician

2. Assisting in classroom 

  • Occasionally assisting teachers with demonstrations in class if requested and if time permits

3. Supporting Health and Safety throughout the department

  • Following COSHH guidelines and department policy at all times
  • Obtaining first-aid assistance when needed and dealing with any spillages or accidents when necessary and ensuring prompt replacement of any safety equipment that is used or damaged

3. Helping with organisation of resources across the department

  • Assisting with annual stock checking under direction of Senior Science Technician.

4. Supporting Science throughout the curriculum

  • Help with preparation of exam materials and administration of PAGs and required practicals.
  • To help maintain the displays throughout the Science department
  • To support Science department with photocopying
  • To support the Science department and School with general admin tasks if required.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

With the support of an Assessor, you will demonstrate the Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours required to meet this Apprenticeship Standard. 

You will work towards gaining the 'IOSH Working Safely Certificate'.

You will have the option of completing the 'National Diploma in Laboratory Technical Skills’ alongside the Apprenticeship Standard, should you wish.

If required, you will be supported in completing L2 Functional skills in math and/or English.

About the employer

The Ashcombe School is a comprehensive school for pupils of all abilities between the ages of 11 and 18 which has recently converted by forming a Multi Academy Trust, South East Surrey Schools Education Trust, as a partnership with 2 other like-minded schools to keep the ethos of the school the same.
