What will the apprentice be doing?


College work

  • Undertake and successfully complete the required college work throughout the training period, achieving academic standards and practical skills in order to progress to a qualification in mechanical engineering.

You will be trained in:

  • Mig Welding
  • Arc Welding
  • Use of an Oxford plasma cutter
  • Hand held threading machine

Assisting with CBS Ltd Installations and Projects

  •  Take direction from experienced CBS Ltd team members to assist with installations and projects for our clients.
  • Observe, learn and understand a wide range of engineering skills and processes while under the instruction and supervision of our skilled team
  • Develop the skills required to interpret verbal instructions and drawings to be able to effectively assist with client projects.

Work equipment & tools

  • Become proficient in the application and use of a wide range of machine and hand tools.
  • Become proficient in the application and use of a wide range of machine and hand tools.
  • Ensure the proper use, handling and storage of all tools, substances and equipment and report any issues to the Project Manager.
  • Contribute to the correct storage of all parts and consumables.

Health & Safety & Security

  • Assist in maintaining a positive safety culture within the company by adhering to safe systems of work, company policies and legal requirements.
  • Bring any problems or issues to the attention of the Project Manager so that risk assessments and method statements can be amended to ensure that they are current and relevant.
  • Read and sign all risk assessments and method statements for specific jobs off site.
  • Implement personal and company safety measures by wearing PPE.
  • Contribute to maintaining working areas in a clean and orderly condition
  • Keep the yard, company stock and equipment secure.
  • Report any accidents and near misses that occur in the yard or off site

Leadership & Communication

  • Represent CBS by acting in a professional manner at all times.
  • Communicate with the Project Manager and Yard Foreman to update on any issues and requirements. Make suggestions for improvement.
  • Follow company procedures and work to company standards.
  • Collaborate with contractors, construction workers, electricians and pipefitters when working on client sites.

Training & Development

  • Attend training and meetings as requested by the company and the college.
  • Take opportunities to develop competency by shadowing experienced team members to observe and practice new tasks under supervision.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

  • As stated previously you will mostly be based at CBS Ltd fabrication yard at Fareham
  • The apprentice will undertake a structured training programme of academic study at college and practical work in the workplace in order to gain the required skills and knowledge to support the company.
  • We offer in-house training modules in topics such as Health & Safety, Asbestos Awareness, COSHH, Respiratory Health, Noise & Vibration and Work at Height.
  • There may also be formal structured training courses to attend off site such as First Aid, IPAF and PASMA (where required).
  • We will arrange for the apprentice to have a CSCS card (Construction Skills Certification Scheme).
  • You will attend college one day a week at the Andover College campus.
  • You will ultimately achieve Level 3 Metal Fabrication Apprenticeship and a Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

We have a training matrix in place to work through and we will guide and assist you to learn the trade and become a fully qualified long-term member of our team.

You will also have the opportunity to learn on the job from other colleagues who are already qualified.

Things to consider

Occasionally, some projects that are carried out away from the business may require overnight stays. Work on our premises is carried out in our fabrication yard which is mainly outdoors (undercover). PPE has to be worn to carry out the job safely e.g. overalls, gloves, face protection, eye protection etc. Work on client sites may involve working in hot environments e.g. plant rooms For insurance purposes and that you have to drive company vehicles on occasion, a full clean driving licence is a requirement A good level of physical fitness will be required to withstand working outdoors, some work at height and the manual handling of pipework.
