What will the apprentice be doing?

This vacancy is within a multi-discipline team designing high powered manufacturing systems, offering training in skills used in new product development from customer engagement through to prototype design and transfer to volume production.

Day-to-day duties:

· Wiring and cable assembly modelling using E-plan.

· Manufacturing drawing creation

· Electrical design calculations

· Hands-on Prototype building including panel wiring, component soldering

· Creating and contributing to: manuals, Standard Operating Procedures, User Requirement Specifications, Functional Design Specifications, Failure Mode Effect Analysis, design reviews etc

· Hands on testing of products

· Writing of reports

· Part and bill of materials creation in MRP system

· Supplier liaising

· Component sourcing

Successful candidate will report directly to the Electrical system design engineer, working closely with a multi-disciplinary development team designing products. This role offers and excellent opportunity to gain experience with the other departments involved in the development of products for a fast-moving strong growth high technology company.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

  • The learner will be studying the Engineering Fitter Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard qualification, which includes the EAL Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence), EAL Level 3 Diploma of their choice, mainly Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering or employer training plan as agreed, and the Pearson BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Technical Knowledge).
  • Day release to West Suffolk College.
  • Functional skills will be studied if equivalent qualifications are not held.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

On successful completion of the 4 year apprenticeship there will be an opportunity to become a full time employee within the engineering team along with the option to either continuing to the HNC/HND mechanical pathway with a defined progression plan based on performance whilst fulfilling the role of Mechanical systems design engineer 4 days a week or to not undertake any further education, fulfilling the role of Mechanical systems design engineer 5 days a week.

Things to consider

This role will be mainly computer based focussing on e-plan design activity, but as these projects progress into advanced stages the activity will transition. The prototyping and testing stages will be very hands-on, with the candidate required to assist with physical build, assembly and testing of the final product.
