What will the apprentice be doing?

  • Preparation for each shift. Sanitising of work spaces, setting out equipment for shift (chopping boards, knives, temp prob and wipes etc.), preparing salad, vegetables, sauces etc. dish specific preparation.
  • Ensuring all hygiene practices are followed pre, during and post service, surfaces and equipment maintained to the highest standards. Including the recording of measures taken.
  • You will work across all aspects of cooking and presentation of meals as your skills develop

As your skills develop you will take on greater responsibility under the guidance of chef and owner Rob Robertson who has over 20 years’ experience within the industry.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

The apprenticeship training is delivered through a combination of workplace learning and regular college attendance. This training will teach you the knowledge, skills and behaviours set out in the Commis Chef standard. Functional Skills in Maths and English may also be required depending on current level.   

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

With a full time position available following successful completion of the apprenticeship you will continue to develop skills and advance in our establishment

You MUST be prepared to commit to your work and training for the duration of the apprenticeship. The Kings Arms is situated in the village of Thornford, West Dorset and lies between the towns of Sherborne and Yeovil, where a warm welcome awaits you in this family friendly Free House. A dog friendly bar area flows through to the dining room, showcasing local artist’s work. Two outside areas, the beer garden and a non-smoking terrace, are found either side of the building with a children’s play area adjacent to the well-used skittle alley and function room towards the rear of the beer garden offering a menu using locally sourced produce, a selection of wines, soft drinks and freshly ground coffees. With a fine selection of fine local and west country ales, the West Dorset pub of the year 2020 and featuring in the CAMARA good beer guide 2021 and 2022. We accept CAMRA vouchers. The hub of the village and a destination for walkers and cyclists to stop off at, a place to drink and dine, the Kings Arms also attracts many from neighbouring villages and towns.
