What will the apprentice be doing?

We are now seeking to train an Apprentice Toolmaker, working in conjunction with one of our local training North Cambridgeshire Training Centre (NCTC Chatteris), on a day release basis. You will be enrolled on a 48 month advanced manufacturing engineering level 3 Engineering Machinist pathway apprenticeship.

The candidate Toolmaker will be working in our busy toolroom working on press tooling and fixtures along with maintaining and repairing all current tooling as well as manufacturing precision production machined components using all types of engineering equipment and methods. Tohey will learn how to use mills, lathes, surface grinders, hand tools, radial drills, CNC mill, CNC EDM wire eroder or spark drills. Candidate to design precision Press Tools, jigs and fixtures using 2D and 3D CAD and CAM software and manufacture tool to customer requirements. Thay will work in a safe manner using safety equipment provided, to advise on any potential hazard and to keep the workplace clean.

Main duties include:

  • Reporting to the Forming and Toolroom Cell Leader Be able to liaise with other members of staff to ensure optimum use of workshop equipment.
  • Be able to work in a small team and be able to communicate at all levels.
  • Be able to work on his or her own initiative and to tight deadlines, in liaison with other staff.
  • Be able to complete work within reasonable deadlines set by the Cell Leader.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

  • The learner will be studying the Engineering Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship standard qualification.
  • Day release to West Suffolk College.
  • Functional skills will be studied if equivalent qualifications are not held.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

Possible development within the organization, with all or other apprentices going on to relevant HNC level courses.
