What will the apprentice be doing?


  • To be responsible for the safety and welfare of the children.
  • To promote the physical, intellectual, emotional, educational and social development of the children.
  • To ensure that there is a stimulating and varied programme of activities available to the children at all times.
  • To ensure that the children are offered a nutritious and varied diet, appropriate to their age and development.
  • To encourage, through example, alternatives to sexual stereo-typing imposed by society
  • To ensure that the children are kept clean, and encouraged to wash their hands, wipe their noses etc. The children must always be escorted to the toilet.
  • To be aware of the effect that racism in society and in ourselves has on children; to give every child in the nursery a positive image of its own particular ethnic background, through the attitude of staff and by the use of play and display materials.
  • To notify the officer-in-charge or his/her deputy when each child is collected by their parent/carer.


  • To keep progress records and reports the children.
  • To develop and maintain a warm and supportive relationship with the parents, children and staff.
  • To participate in planning activities.
  • To ensure that all toys, equipment and materials are safe for the use of pre-school children, and in a good state of repair. Toys must be washed once a week.
  • To perform any other duties required at the discretion of the officer-in-charge or management.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

Online or in-person training around the curriculum, well-being and safe-guarding – this is the same training given to all staff.

What will be involved at level 2?

The Early Years Practitioner Level 2 Apprenticeship is made up of several components which develop the practitioner’s knowledge, skills and behaviour.

The programme is spread across 12 months and covers 11 units across 2 themes:

As part of government policy to raise the quality of an apprentice’s learning, a ‘20% off the job learning’ policy applies to apprenticeships. Off-the-job training can include training that is delivered at the apprentice’s normal place of work but must not be delivered as part of their normal working duties.

Functional Skills: 
Apprentices also work towards a Level 1 or 2 qualification in English and maths in the first half of the programme if they have no prior exemption (GCSE’s  A - C / 4 - 9 or equivalents in English and Maths).

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

A permanent full time position would be offered subject to satisfactory completion of the apprenticeship as well as progression to the Early Years Educator apprenticeship programme.

About the employer

Stepping Stones was founded in 1996 and has been under the same management ever since. Housed in two rooms within the Church of God of Prophecy in Kitto Road, we are able to cater for up to 29 children aged between 6 months and 5 years old. Our aims and objectives are: To provide high quality childcare provision for young children and their families. To enable parents to return to education or work, so that they improve their children’s life and get them out of poverty and depravation. To serve the local community, to promote racial equality and anti-discriminatory practice and inclusive provision. To ensure that all children have access to an appropriate broad curriculum, be considered as individuals, have their needs met, be given opportunities to become independent, and have access to all areas of the curriculum and provision (equality of opportunity). To reflect to the local and wider community and make all children and their families feel comfortable, welcome and included. We are open from 8.00 am to 6.00 pm Monday to Friday throughout the year except for bank holidays, one week at Easter, two weeks in August and seven working days at Christmas. The school day begins at 9.00 am and all children are expected to have arrived by this time. Our Montessori class caters for children aged two to five, and we also have a toddler unit for children aged 6 months upwards. The minimum age of entry to the toddler unit is 6 months. Children can join the main Montessori class from the age of two years. Children may start at any time of the year, subject to the availability of places.
