What will the apprentice be doing?
In the role of Apprentice Gardener you will work alongside and learn from The Newt’s horticulturists and take an active role in the care and development of the horticultural collections including working in the main Visitor Attraction Gardens, Woodlands, Plant Records, wider estate and the Nursery.
Key responsibilities include:
Assist with a range of horticultural tasks in the day to day cultivation and maintenance of the garden, conservatory, nursery and plant records on rotation with specified horticulture teams as part of your learning and development. You will work in a team environment and individually to a standard agreed with the Line Manager
Participation and attendance in the practical training programme in the gardens, with assessment of the Level 2 work based qualification
Compliance with all Health & Safety regulations and procedures.
Attend and complete equipment and machinery training as required to ensure safe operation in line with company guidelines
Actively engage and interact with visitors and colleagues answering questions, providing guidance and imparting knowledge to promote and enhance The Newt’s reputation as a leading garden attraction
Actively promote the work of horticulture within other areas of the Estate, thereby developing and maintaining the culture of collaboration and co-operation across all the Estate Departments and functions
Be involved and assist in the preparation and delivery of horticultural talks and demonstrations to visitors, colleagues, local officials and external bodies as directed
Actively participate in professional societies and other organisations to disseminate and share ideas assisting you to keep current on industry developments with aim to constantly monitor and improve cultivational practices and strive for Horticultural excellence.
What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?
You will be working towards the Level 2 Horticulture Operative Qualification provided by Kingston Maurwood College, this will involve attending day release once a week at the college near Dorchester. Alongside the Level 2 Award you will receive any training required to complete your qualification and be actively involved in professional societies and organisations to disseminate, share ideas and keep current on industry developments in order to monitor and improve cultivational practices and strive for Horticultural excellence.
What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?
On successful completion of the Level 2 Qualification and a positive Workplace Review we would hope to offer a permanent role within the organisation.
