What will the apprentice be doing?

As a Lighting Design Apprentice, you will work within the Lighting Application Team working on projects for professional customers. These include a variety of applications, such as Offices, Retail & Hospitality, Industrial premises, Roads & Tunnels and Sports lighting. Your challenge will be to create design proposals that are desirable, feasible and viable. This will mainly be based on using products from Signify’s professional brands (Philips, ColorKinetics, Modular and Interact), but will also include developing specific project variants, and fully customized luminaires.


As part of your apprenticeship, you will spend dedicated time working between technical and commercial teams to gather a holistic view of the company’s strategy and processes. Therefore, the role will mix office work with site visits and customer meetings.

During your 3-year apprenticeship, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Work closely with other internal stakeholder, such as the sales and quotation teams, to understand customer requirements and ensure the design brief is achieved both technically and commercially.
  • Use 3D software to producing lighting level calculations and artistic visualizations.
  • Brainstorm ideas and discuss their feasibility with technical experts inc Lighting Designers, luminaire Customisation Specialists and product managers.
  • Use AutoCAD to produce lighting layout drawings and learn to produce luminaire & controls ‘bill of materials’ that enable quotations to be produced.
  • Define the technical and commercial risks and benefits as part of a business cases and ‘return on investment’ calculations.
  • Support collaboration with external stakeholders (inc factories and local vendors) to manage lead-times and pricing of customized solutions.
  • Support other lighting and customisation specialists and the Quotation Team with gatekeeping, pacesetting and updating project tracker database.
  • Develop product knowledge to provide specification breaks to compete against competitors.  This includes but not limited to: competitor research / product development / develop quotations.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

One of our chosen providers is University of Chichester. As part of the programme our apprentices are required to spend 1 day at University (virtually or within a class room setting). We recommend the Electrical/Electronic Technical Support Engineer Degree Apprenticeship course, but we welcome other suggestions as well.  

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

After successful completion of your 3 year apprenticeship you will be offered a permanent role at Signify having successfully demonstrated the appropriate skills and behaviour for effective performance. There are also opportunities to continue learning to gain further external qualifications in addition to the many learning opportunities within Signify.
