What will the apprentice be doing?

The apprentice will be working alongside several highly experienced and skilled builders to learn and develop knowledge and skills in all aspects of general building, brickwork and all construction.

Every day will be an opportunity to have hands-on experience of the different competencies required to become a highly-skilled builder.

Tasks include:

  • Foundations: calculation and installation
  • Brick work: calculations, types, aggregate mixes, brick (and stone laying)
  • Trench work with piping and small machinery
  •  Property extension construction – including walls, window crevasse, insulation and roofing
  • Paving & pathway floor work (internal and external)
  • Roof work including chimneys
  • Use of small works machinery 

Experience will be gained on residential and commercial projects.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

Bricklayer apprentices attend York College on block release (approximately one week per month) and work for their employer for the rest of the time. Practical assessment will take place during the apprenticeship. Apprentices will also be required to produce a portfolio of evidence typically during the last 10 months of the apprenticeship. This must contain at least 15 pieces of work evidence.

The qualification achieved at the end of the apprenticeship is Bricklayer Apprenticeship level 2.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

We have taken on other apprentices full time upon completion of the apprenticeship.  We also have team members who started from the ground and progressed into management roles and leadership roles.
Eventual career progression is as high as you’d like to get to.
