What will the apprentice be doing?

The main place of work will be at Nedging Hall with work required at gardens of four other houses and the company’s businesses, such as the Lindsey Rose and The Bildeston Crown. The apprenticeship would be taken at Suffolk Rural (Otley) College with minimal college attendance required, and periodic external reviews undertaken. The successful candidate would work four days a week with the fifth day set aside for onsite training or assignment work.

The types of work are very varied including maintenance of formal gardens, lawns, hedges, fruit and vegetable gardens, greenhouses, orchards, and ornamental beds. In the winter the team take on firewood production and distribution for the farm. Candidates will also be required to assist with setting up events held by the farm and businesses. The work is physically demanding and can involve working in adverse weather conditions. Work will include other duties as they arise and as requested by the line manager.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

The qualification will be either the Level 2 or Level 3 apprenticeship in Horticulture/ Landscape operative, depending on experience.

Training for all job specific tasks will be given. In addition the apprentice will have the support and guidance of a qualified assessor from the college, who will make on-site visits around every 6-8 weeks. There may be the occasional need to attend either the Ipswich or Rural Suffolk (Otley) campus for short training courses and tests.

Things to consider

The work is in a quiet and in a remote rural location; it is essential that you have your own transport as there is no bus service available. You will be working in a small team and the role will involve long periods of working outside. You may, occasionally, be asked to work at our other businesses in Suffolk should the need arise.
