What will the apprentice be doing?
Working in a multitude of varying environments, you will be an integral part of our expert team by working alongside professional colleagues to deliver the highest of standards, whilst developing your skills and knowledge of the industry, throughout your apprenticeship.
Plumbing and Domestic Heating Technicians plan, select, install, service, commission and maintain all aspects of plumbing and heating systems. Plumbing and domestic heating technicians can find themselves working inside or outside a property. Customer service skills and being tidy and respectful are important qualities as they can often find themselves working in customers’ homes as well as on building sites.
The exact job depends on the employer, though all plumbers have the skills and knowledge to get the job done properly and safely.
A plumbing and domestic heating technician will need to be able to:
• work at height
• work alone or with little supervision
• travel
• build relationships
• read building and engineering drawings
• understand heating control wiring and circuit diagrams
• choose materials and equipment
• carry out accurate measuring, marking, cutting, bending and jointing of pipes
• inspect and test installations
• diagnose and fix faults
• write reports
What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?
As part of the JTL Plumbing and Domestic Heating Technician apprenticeship, you'll be in full time employment with a local company receiving a decent wage from day one. You'll spend time learning your trade by gaining hands-on experience working on-site with your employer, as well as attending a JTL approved college or training centre to learn the theoretical knowledge you will need.
You will be working towards a level 3 apprenticeship. The apprenticeship comprises the following qualifications:
• City & Guilds or BPEC Level 3 Plumbing and Domestic Heating Qualification
• Industry certifications specific to fuel type
• Functional skills may be required to be undertaken at the following levels if you do not have equivalent qualifications (such as GCSEs) at time of starting the apprenticeship: Level 2 English and Level 2 Maths
What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?
The advertised apprentice wage will increase yearly or upon completion of progressive stages. After initially qualifying, you could go on to supervisory roles, senior management positions or even running your own business.
