The Apprentice will work alongside experienced colleagues to carry out testing, fault finding and rectification of locomotives, plus the static testing of locomotives on the loadbank in accordance with the Companies and Customers Technical specifications and procedures, plus the Rail recognised Industry Standards in a safe and efficient manner.

What will the apprentice be doing?
- The apprentice Locomotive Technician will be expected to prepare the locomotive and surrounding area for the testing, fault finding and rectification to ensure all colleagues are aware of the work being carried out and are protected from entering the site and locomotive whilst under test.
- The apprentice will learn how to carry out a planned fault-finding procedure sequence to ensure all systems are checked and proven in a logical manner.
- To report and record any non – compliance with the vehicles VMOI.
- Repair to ensure component parts when tested meets with the VMOI criteria.
- To be prepared to travel to site (national) to carryout fault finding tasks with experienced colleagues as and when required.
- To comply with on-site requirements to meet their criteria of a safe system of work.
- Ensure all work is undertaken in accordance with the Companies and Customers Technical specifications and procedures, plus the Rail recognised Industry Standards.
- Apprentice will in time be accountable to ensure all work sheets are legible, completed, signed off and available for examination.
- Ensure all activities are conducted in a safe and efficient manner.
What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?
- The apprentice will undertake the Level 4 Railway Enigneering Advanced Technician apprenticeship standard
- The apprentice will attend the National College for Advanced Transport & Infrastructure (Doncaster Campus) on day release
- Other industry relevant training will be provided as required
What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?
Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship, the appiclant would be considered for a full-time position and potential to enrol onto Level 5 Rail & Rail Systems apprenticeship or alternative pathways dependent on the needs of the business.
