What will the apprentice be doing?

Our projects require many parts and components from various suppliers, including our own in-house teams.  Some of these components will have rough edges or slight imperfections through the manufacturing process.  Some will also come in sections which will require bonding together.  As we begin the build process, our Composites team make sure that everything is bonded, trimmed and assembled ready for the next production phase - usually paint.

You will learn and develop the skills required to fulfil the role of a Composites Technician, such as:

  • Reading engineering drawings, symbols and tolerances
  • Using hand tools
  • Measuring and marking out materials
  • Bonding and trimming assemblies and materials
  • Fettling moulds and patterns
  • Understanding the order in which work needs to be carried out
  • Understanding the design process and why certain materials are used for certain things

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

20% of your working time (1 day a week) will be spent studying Level 2 Engineering Operative at Corby Tresham (part of Bedford College)

There are no entry requirements for this course but if you don't have GCSE Standard Maths and English grades A (4) to C (9) then you must be prepared to study and achieve these as part of your apprenticeship.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

This is a great opportunity for someone looking to start their engineering career.  Our apprentices are very much part of our RML family and this certainly isn't an apprenticeship where you will be doing the same thing every day.

The position will be offered initially on a fixed-term basis for the duration of the apprenticeship training (24 months).  At the end of the apprenticeship we will discuss any permanent positions we have available and the opportunity for further studies.
