What will the apprentice be doing?

A golf club has a variety of landscapes that require looking after in various ways everything from formal gardens and flower beds to the sports turf on the Tee’s, Fairway and greens

Daily Duties;

  • Cut tees, greens, surrounds, fairways, rough and semi rough
  • Set up golf courses, changing holes, moving tee markers, indicating, Drop zones and hazards
  • Switch and brush greens
  • Apply top dressing and fertilizer
  • Identify/control pests and diseases
  • Renovate worn and damaged turf
  • Prepare/maintain machinery

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

This standard is recognised by the British & International Golf Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA), the Professional Body for Greenkeepers. At the start of the apprenticeship the apprentice will be registered with BIGGA. Upon completion of this standard the apprentice will be eligible to join BIGGA as a full member and become a BIGGA Accredited Greenkeeper.

Training by day release at Shipley College.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

The employer is keen to offer progression to full employment on a successful completion of the apprenticeship. The apprentice would be able to progress to higher level horticulture qualifications or team leader roles within the industry.
