What will the apprentice be doing?

You will work towards becoming a fully trained and qualified Technical Support Engineer. Tesla products include MRI gradient coils, electro-magnets and superconducting magnets. You will be given the opportunity to work in the following areas, on a 4-month rotational basis, not necessarily in the order shown below, during the first 20 months of the apprenticeship after which you will have the opportunity to specialise:

Engineering Projects Rotation Resistive Magnets & Superconducting Magnets In this leg of the rotation you will learn and become proficient in the manufacture and testing of Tesla products. On completion of training you should be competent in the following:

  • Be able to read and understand engineering drawings
  • Proficient in the use of mechanical and electrical measuring and test equipment and be able to perform measurements and tests unsupervised
  • Be able to understand and follow instruction set out in test documents
  • Understand quality management systems
  • Be able to use basic machine tools.

Engineering Production Rotation Gradients Here you will learn and become proficient in the assembly and construction of Tesla products. You will be given the opportunity to work on products as a member of an assembly team and ultimately on their own. On completion of training you should be competent in the following:

  • Be proficient in the assembly of Tesla products, manufacturing processes including Soldering, Brazing, Fitting, Coil Winding and Vacuum Impregnation
  • Be able to read and understand engineering drawings
  • Be able to contribute to assembly fault finding, design and manufacturing reviews.
  • Be able to write manufacturing documentation using MS Word / Excel
  • Be able to use basic machine tools.

Quality Rotation Working within the Quality Team you will learn and become proficient in the quality assurance of Tesla products. On completion of training you should be competent in the following:

  • Be able to read and understand engineering drawings
  • Proficient in the use of mechanical and electrical measuring and test equipment and be able to perform measurements and tests unsupervised
  • Be able to understand quality management systems. Have a basic understanding of auditing and be able to assist a trained auditor in performing Quality and Environmental audits
  • Understand material certification and be able to relate to design and customer requirements
  • Be able to perform in house calibration of mechanical measuring equipment and manage calibration of outsourced calibration, maintaining records and calibration status
  • Be proficient in the collection and handling of performance data relating to the Quality department

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

Engineering Technician L3 Apprenticeship Standard - This will include on-site training at Tesla and day release attendance at college.

On completion of the apprenticeship, you will have achieved the following qualification;

  • An employer approved Level 2 Foundation Competence qualification
  • An employer approved Level 3 Development Competence qualification

The final apprenticeship completion certificate will be issued on achievement of the above qualification and successful completion of final end point assessment.
