What will the apprentice be doing?

Responsibilities and Tasks:

  • Ability to read detailed engineering drawings with an understanding of limits ad fits
  • By reference to machine manuals able to understand the key components of the equipment and the critical dimensions.
  • Working with manual centre lathes up to 5m bed. Using DTI’s set up jobs to critical dimensions using 3 and 4 jaw chucks with running centres and steadies as required.
  • Become proficient in jigs and tool making to execute the works.
  • Develop understanding of cutting speeds and lubricants for a variety on ferrous and nonferrous materials including duplex stainless.
  • Able to accurately measure dimensions with micrometres, verniers and bore mics etc
  • Work with large centre grinding equipment to develop skills in working to tight tolerances and surface finishes.
  • Skilled in working with high-speed balancing equipment to international and internal quality norms
  • Develop skills with hand tools for cutting and filing to manufacture repair parts
  • Detailed disassembly and assembly of complex high speed rotating equipment including planetary and CYCLO gearboxes.
  • Participate in factory testing of assembled equipment and components
  • Ongoing development with potential to develop basic fabrication skills using MIG / TIG and Plasma Transfer Arc welding techniques
  • As part of the development conduct planned field service activities of all types including service, breakdowns, installations, and commissioning support
  • Conduct planned service activities within the GEA Milton Keynes workshop when required

Skills and Attributes we are looking for:

  • To be comfortable with hand tools and demonstrate basic engineering skills
  • Show a strong interest in engineering and keen to learn and develop
  • Willingness to travel around the UK and Europe to gain the necessary experience and training
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft applications especially word and excel

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

  • Full Level 3 Engineering Technician Apprenticeship Standard
  • Day release to MK College.
  • Hands on training in the GEA workshop working alongside experienced engineers.
  • Use of milling machine, lathes, manual grinding machines, handheld tools, sharpening of drill bits, fitting and assembly, testing of machinery.
  • Potential to also develop basic fabrication skills.
  • Join training courses at our parent company in Germany to obtain specific machine type training.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

The successful completion of the apprenticeship will allow the candidate to apply for a permanent position within GEA.
