What will the apprentice be doing?
This is a 2 year Level 2 Horticulture Apprenticeship Programme, where you will mainly be based at Coventry University’s award winning campus in the centre of Coventry. You will also have the opportunity of working at the University’s external sporting facilities at Westwood Heath and Ryton Organic site, attending one day per week at Brooksby College in Melton Mowbray for the knowledge and off the job delivery.
Main duties and responsibilities:
- Combine On/Off the Job training at our award winning landscape.
- Participate in the maintenance of the Group’s green spaces and public realm area.
- Develop skills in the maintenance and safe operation of horticultural and public realm equipment and machinery.
- Gain necessary skills and knowledge to gain the Apprenticeship Level Two in Horticulture
- Participate in the full range of year round cyclical grounds maintenance, sport, landscape development and public realm operations.
- Assisting with the development of new areas and site-wide planting.
- Taking account of Health and Safety in horticultural operations both in relation to personal health and welfare, and that of others.
- Amenity horticulture (i.e. the care of turf, parks, gardens and other green spaces) maintenance of sporting surfaces.
- Cultivation of plants, including the planting, pruning and weeding operations
- Safe use and maintenance of hand held petrol driven tools
- Use and maintenance of a range of ride on machinery
- A full range of planned maintenance tasks
What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?
You will gain the following from undertaking the Level 2 Horticulture Apprenticeship:
- Level 2 Diploma in Work-Based Horticulture;
- Employee Rights and Responsibilities;
- Personal Learning and Thinking Skills;
- Level 3 First Aid;
- PA1 (Using Pesticides Safely);
- Level 1 in Maths and English if not already achieved.
The knowledge delivery and off the job learning will take place at Brooksby College in Melton Mowbray one day per week. The remaining time will be spent learning on the job across the Group’s award winning green spaces and public realm areas within the Coventry area. This will involve developing skills in supporting the delivery of a clean and attractive campus by working as part of the Grounds Team, maintaining the grounds and ensuring the safe operation of horticultural and public realm equipment and machinery. Participation in the full range of year round cyclical grounds maintenance, sport, landscape development and public realm operations. Assisting with the development of new areas and site wide planting.
What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?
Upon completion of the Level 2 Horticulture Apprenticeship we are hopeful that this will lead to a permanent position within the Coventry University Group’s Grounds Team as a Grounds Person
