What will the apprentice be doing?

  • Assemble and finish equipment according to information supplied as scheduled by the Assembly Lead and Production Manager.
  • Assemble precision mechanisms and sub-assemblies.
  • Identify and resolve issues and provide feedback of any problems to the Assembly Lead.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings.
  • Basic machine wiring such as cable running.
  • Provide feedback of any problems to the Assembly Lead.
  • Adhere to all company policies and procedures and participate fully in the Health & Safety arrangements.
  • Work in an ethical and professional manner.
  • Travel to customer sites and carry out installation, servicing work if required.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

  • The apprentice will be working towards the Engineering Technician Level 3 apprenticeship standard.
  • Qualifications include; Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence) and Level 3 Diploma or Extended Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Knowledge).
  • College attendance will be at the Colchester Institute - Colchester Campus 2 days per week for the first year and 1 day per week in the years thereafter.

The position may lead to the candidate reaching a supervisory level on the assembly production side of the business or the opportunity of moving into the engineering side of the business.

The work will be primarily based at the site in Ardleigh, Essex, and it is essential that the candidate has the ability to get to and from work on time. Curtis Machine Tools Ltd (CMT) are a machine tools manufacturer near to Colchester, Essex who are primarily involved with the designing, manufacture, installation and after-market support of bespoke engineered cylindrical grinding machinery. All of the above operations are undertaken currently at their site in Ardleigh which employs around 18 personnel. CMT’s customers are primarily large global organisations and as such, CMT’s sales are largely export related. Market segments that CMT are currently operating in are Automotive, Medical, Tooling and Defence.
