What will the apprentice be doing?

The key objectives of the role are to:

  • Follow guidelines set to achieve the Apprenticeship Standard certification by carrying out the required course work required with on-the-job training and off-the-job training
  • Assist the operations department in ensuring that all machines are prepped and ready for the next run

 

Key responsibilities are:

  • To assist our experienced printers in the setting up, running, and cleaning of machinery
  • To provide assistance in ensuring that the machines operate at their most efficient operational speeds
  • To follow preventative and operational maintenance schedules and guidelines to ensure that machines function at their optimum condition
  • To ensure that turnaround from job to job is carried out in the most efficient and effective method
  • To train on all digital machinery, including sheet and roll fed
  • To assist in other print departments, as and when required
  • To monitor the production schedule ensuring that materials are picked and laid out in the correct location in time to meet production requirements
  • To complete any documentation in accordance with company procedures

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

 

The apprentice will acheive a Level 2 Printer Operative apprenticeship standard.

This qualification has been developed to provide a foundation to start a career in print, the broad purpose of the role is to assist in the production of a printed product or component. The course is delivered over two years.

Core Knowledge – The following topics will be covered at varying levels:

o   The printing and graphic communication industry

o   Culture, values, processes

o   Technical knowledge and print industry practices

o   Pre-press, press and post-press processes / equipment

o   Customer expectation, resolving problems and ensuring quality

o   Health and safety, environmental requirements, and laws

 

The training will take place in the workplace at Kolorcraft based in Ossett, with assessments from the BPIF on a regular basis. As part of the qualification you will be required to do 20% off the job training per week, this time will be spent on our job awareness scheme, where you will spend time in all different areas of the business, learning the different processes and procedures.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

Once qualified and within the needs of the business, you will have the opportunity to become Digital Print Operative. Or, depending on your preference, you may choose to work elsewhere in the business using the skills that you will have picked up on your job awareness training.

Things to consider

Please note due to the shift pattern, candidates must be over 18. Vacancy will close early if the right candidate is found. At certain points of the day the post holder will be expected to undertake bending, lifting, and stretching in the course of their duties which also may involve heavy lifting for which Manual Handling Training will be provided.
