What will the apprentice be doing?
Client and Design Team Liaison:
Develop positive trust based relationships with members of the design team
Review drawn information issued by the design team
Correspond with design team
Surveys:
Carry out surveys of existing constructions, accompanied by their manager
Design and Drawings:
Prepare sketches and drawings taking responsibility for dimensional accuracy and content
Check drawings prepared by others for dimensional accuracy
Site Involvement:
Attend site to inspect and report on construction progress and quality, normally accompanied by their manager
Be observant of site Health and Safety issues
Quality Assurance:
Fulfil the requirements of the Quality Management System ensuring all procedures are followed
Health & Safety:
Encourage safe working methods for self and colleagues within and outside the office
Training:
Keep technically up to date and maintain Continuous Professional Development records
Financial:
Aim to work as efficiently as possible at all times to ensure profitability of each commission
What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?
BTEC Level 3 in Civil Engineering
Consisting of 10 units:
7 mandatory units
3 optional units
How is it delivered?
Day release at New College Swindon for 18-24 months, this will include face to face delivery, remote learning opportunities and will also have practical elements to support the development of the apprentices skills.
End Point Assessment (EPA)
Stage 1- A project which will test the apprentice’s ability to integrate the knowledge, skills and behaviours acquired during the apprenticeship by developing a response to a technical project brief set by the Professional Engineering Institution, with a number of options and a rationale for the choice of one as the optimum solution.
A written report of 1400-1600 words which demonstrates how, in the course of their apprenticeship, the apprentice has integrated the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to be a competent Civil Engineering Technician. The report is verified by a professionally qualified engineer and will be used to inform the structured interview.
Stage 2- A 10-minute presentation by the apprentice to the Assessor Panel showcasing their response to the project brief. This will be followed by 10-15 minutes of questions and discussion.
What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?
After the successful completion of the apprenticeship the candidate will be promoted from Apprentice to Technician. There will be opportunities to continue remote learning if desired and further development towards either Senior Technician / BIM manager roles or progress toward further Engineering qualifications opening up opportunities of promotion to Civil Engineer.
