The candidate would be working in a fast-paced environment to structured time scales making bespoke injection mould tools with a great team of highly skilled friendly people.

What will the apprentice be doing?

  • Full 2D and 3D Cam with some basic/intermediate CAD work using Mastercam
  • Spark erosion and electrode manufacturing, using the very best machinery
  • Bolster work (the basic plates that form part of the tool assembly)
  • Hand fitting, with files die grinders etc.
  • Basic manual machining on milling machines, pin cutters and lathes
  • CNC machining

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

Qualification

  • Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard in Engineering Technician - Toolmaker and Tool and Die Maintenance Technician Pathway
  • Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering - Toolmaker and Tool & Die Maintenance (Development Competence) 
  • BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Technical Knowledge) 
  • Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence) 

End-Point Assessment (EPA)

  • Practical observation – to assess the Apprentice’s application of skills within the Apprentice’s place of work or in a suitable environment away from the workplace. (e.g. In a centre approved by the EPAO)
  • Professional discussion – to holistically assess KSBs across the standard and will be informed by reflective portfolio.

Delivery Method

Currently delivered two days per week (Term Time Only) at Loughborough College, first and second year of learning. One day per week (Term Time Only) at Loughborough College third year of learning.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

To become a permanent member to the team at Ledwell or standout as a highly skilled and well-trained tool maker filling the huge gap in the labour market which is facing shortage of Manufacturing Engineers.
